February 10th, 2009Yoga uses meditation to gain control over the body and the mind. It is one of the six schools of Hindu philosophy and is mentioned in the ancient Hindu scriptures like the Upanishads, Bhagvad Gita, Patanjali. In recent years, Hatha yoga has become popular worldwide as a form of exercise . It involves practice of yoga postures or asanas.
Though most people learn yoga from a trained yoga teacher, they often do not have the time to attend yoga classes regularly due to their busy schedule. Doing yoga at home allows them to practice yoga according to their convenience. Many office goers can practice yoga early in the morning or after they return home from work. Even if a person has just started learning yoga, doing it home, with better prepare the person for the next yoga session.
Yoga should be practiced before eating or at least 2 hours after a meal. Ideally, a minimum of fifteen minutes should be set aside daily for doing yoga. In case it is not possible to spend fifteen minutes,a person should try to do at least a single asana.
To do yoga at home, certain accessories and equipment are required:
1. Yoga mat or sticky mat: They provide some cushioning on a hard surface when practicing the yoga postures. They also prevent your hands and and feet from slipping, especially when a person starts sweating. These mats should be washed regularly to prevent buildup of bacteria. Most mats cost about $20.
2. Blankets are useful props for doing exercises. A person doing yoga can sit and lie on them during the various postures.
3. Blocks make it more comfortable to do yoga and improve the alignment.
